There are many more questions about yesterday’s murderous tragedy than
there are answers. From outsiders to the VT student body “Why would someone
do this?” must be the most frequently asked now that the gruesome “What”
has been ascertained.
There is a second “Why” prominent in the minds of Alumni nation-wide. Why,
with all the miles and years separating us from the classroom, does this
hurt so badly, so personally? The answer for this writer and many of the
undersigned is that VT was the best time of our lives. This was also an
attack on a dear and integral part of ourselves. Yesterday a most sacred
and hallowed ground of our memories was indelibly and needlessly stained
with innocent blood.
This letter and other acts may ultimately prove hollow in the face of such
devastation. We fervently hope our fellow Hokies take solace that they are
not alone. Your pain is ours. You are in the hopes and prayers of the Hokie
Family, alumni and adopted, in Blacksburg and beyond.
