How to Design Your Own Website.

How to Design Your Own Website.

Have you ever wanted to design your own website? Fed up with the ‘do it for me’ web hosts? Does the thought of templates make you sick? Here’s a simple checklist on how to get started.

First, you need an overall website design.  You can repeat the same activities listed in my What Do I Need to Design a Website article concerning audience, purpose and clarity. I also touch on how to build out your site map – the list of all the pages your website needs – there. Definitely make sure you get those activities done before progressing on to those below.

Next, you should have a good idea on how to go about building each individual kind of page you identified before in your site map. Review the checklist on How to Design a Web Page if you do not. Make an individual web page design for each specific kind of page. Try to make use of the same design as much as possible for continuity’s sake.

By now you already have created a layout. It’s time for you to create an overall website Style Guide. Make a list of each of the following you will use on each page design and why.
— fonts
— sizes
— thematic options
— colors

Finally, apply those choices through out the entire site! Easy enough.
