Elevator Speeches for the Web

Elevator Speeches for the Web

Elevator speeches – they’re everywhere! They say ‘brevity is the soul of wit’ and having a one-sentence description of your business and your website will help your small business increase its profitability on the web.

First off, an elevator speech is a quick summary of what your business does or what your site does. This is an answer you would be able to rattle off to a potential customer in the few seconds an elevator takes to traverse floors.

At the Speed of the Web

Anyone who has looked into their website’s retention metrics knows that you have very little time to make a good impression on a visitor. Some time it’s less than a second! You need to be able to quickly and effectively convey your value proposition. Remember, people surf the web quickly – they may not wait around for a lengthy explanation. Give a quick, compelling statement and then let them ‘peel the onion’ to get more details and nuance. Don’t overwhelm!

Places to Include your Website Elevator Speech

  • Website / Blog tagline
  • Business cards and other printed materials
  • Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn Business page profiles
  • Email signatures

Mine is: “Hessing Software provides end-to-end content delivery and management solutions for web and mobile.”

But I don’t even currently have that on the website. I should add it – thanks for the reminder!

Try adding it to the WordPress tag line (Settings->General) and possibly in the home page meta description field, too.
