Need customers? Go to the web. While I believe that having your own website is the best, most cost-effective way of generating leads for your company, there are plenty of things you can do on the web to gain exposure for you, your company and your website absolutely free.

Blogging isn’t just for 12 year olds and cat diaries. It’s a powerful business tool and easily my best way of generating business. If you have a blog for your business, write an article for it now! If you don’t, you can still help your business by commenting on other blogs. You can start by putting a comment on the bottom of this blog post right now!

Why To Do It

1. Commenting makes you visible to the blog owner, who may end up being a customer. Referrals are made by human networks.

2. By providing a thoughtful, useful comment you illustrate your own competency and engagement. Other readers of the website will see that.

3. Most importantly you get to enter your name and a link to a website. (If you don’t have a website, you can link to anything you want – LinkedIn profile, Facebook page, Google Local profile.) Anything. And that gets you noticed.

There is so much to do on LinkedIn that can get business for you that it I could (and will) write additional articles on the subject. Take those first few steps and you’ll reap the rewards.

LinkedIn is to professionals as Facebook is to teens. It’s your own resume online, a place to interact, where people look for contractors, employees, and to network. It behaves along the “6 degrees of Kevin Bacon” principle. For example, you know someone who knows someone who wants to hire you. This site makes that sort of lead generation possible.

You already know how important Search Engine Optimization is for your business and Google is the 600lb gorilla in the room. But there are other ways Google can help you without you even having a website. These steps are a great way to force Google to know who you are.
