Review of Media Temple Hosting Service

Media Temple review

This is a review of the Media Temple (mt) web hosting company, and it is the first of a series of reviews of other hosting providers that I will post in the coming weeks.  You might, of course, consider hosting your website through Charlotte Web Development, but if your are still in the process of researching your options, this article is a good place to start. As I do not, nor have ever used Media Temple to host my websites with, I am basing this review on what other people who do are saying about it, and I will try to give you the good with the bad, so that you can make a more informed decision.

Media Temple Company Overview

Media Temple has been offering web hosting since 1998.  Their headquarters are in California, though they have several offices around the world.  They currently host more than 200,000 sites, including some for big time businesses such as ABC, Warner Brothers, Sony, Starbucks, Toyota and Adobe.  Media Temple is also one of the few hosting companies that offer the so-called grid hosting, which means that their standard hosting plans are powered by multiple linked stand-alone servers that are well able to withstand traffic spikes. Grid hosting is basically an advanced hosting service advertised as being much better that the old shared server technology still in use by most other hosting companies. Media Temple also offer plans with dedicated hosting, meaning, of course, that you have an entire server all to yourself and won’t have to share it with anyone, which gives you much more control over the management of your domains and hosting than shared hosting plans do.  Because of this Media Temple hosting solutions also come with a higher price tag, though they do offer some plans that even small businesses and individuals can still afford.

What Users Are Saying About Media Temple

Since I do not host my websites with Media Temple, I took a poll among those who do to get the most accurate possible assessment.  Here is what they said in terms of their satisfaction with it:

“For a professional client who requires instant phone support and utmost professionalism I’d go with Media Temple. The have a great reputation but are more expensive (than Dreamhost). It’s referred to as the “darling of the designerverse,” a lot of folks love to display their Media Temple logos on their site, I’m not sure why though. I find their private virtual server’s a little harder to use for average people than Dreamhost’s.”

– Mahalie Stockpole

“Never had any problem with them.  They have a great client support system.”

– Sanchit Thakur

“Based on my 5 years as a customer, we’ve had fantastic performance and service overall.”

– Paul Larson

Some Cons to Signing Up For Hosting With Media Temple

According to some hosting review websites, namely whoishostingthis.com and hostjury.com, the biggest shortfalls of hosting with Media Temple is the amount of downtime that they experience.  Media Temple are aware of this problem and are making, “Changes to the system’s storage architecture which have seen improvements,” as they write on their website.

The second biggest complaint of Media Temple users is slow response time to support queries and tickets.  Though Media Temple boasts of a 24/7 365 days a year customer support availability, many users have complained that tickets stay open for far too long and that Media Temple offers poor phone support.

The Bottom Line

If dedicated hosting is what you need, then Media Temple is definitely a hosting company worth considering.  Their hosting plans are not overly expensive, and though users complain about a lot of unreasonable downtime, the company is working to remedy the situation.  You should also keep in mind that users who were dissatisfied with the service are at least twice as likely to write a review than those who have had a positive experience, which could be the reason for the low scores received by Media Temple on some web hosting review sites.

According to the in-house analysis done by whoishostingthis.com, Media Temple is at least twice as popular as their competitors, and therefore also the most popular hosting service out there.

However, if all the negative reviews scare you off, you might consider signing up for dedicated hosting with either Liquidweb or ServInt, which are both good alternatives.

Overview of Media Temple Hosting Plans

Just so that you do not have to search for all this yourself, I am including the overview of Media Temple hosting plans.  However, please keep in mind that hosting companies often change their pricing, as well as equipment, so you should still visit their website to get the most up-to-date information.

Media Temple offer 3 pre-configured hosting solutions, as well as the option to create a custom made package according to your own specific needs.  The first of their hosting plans is perhaps best suited for individuals, or small businesses with only a few simple websites, while the next batch is geared more towards resellers or large companies with lots of daily traffic.
